Aquarium plays host to dance group

A group of performing arts students choreographed and performed a site-specific dance routine at Hastings Blue Reef Aquarium last Monday.

The five students, who are in their second year of an Extended Diploma in Dance course at West Kent College, Tonbridge, had to devise a dance piece which is not performed in the theatre.

They were inspired by the aquarium’s conservation work and the displays in the Rock-a-Nore Road wildlife attraction.

Sarah Lake, Team Leader in Performing Arts & Music at West Kent College said:  I would like to thank Blue Reef Aquarium for allowing our students to perform in such a stimulating and inspiring location.

“They thoroughly enjoyed themselves and created a lovely and relevant piece of dance,” she added.

Liberty Brown, Emily Cheung, Paige Jefferies, Charlotte Roberts and Megan Williams were the dancers who provided visitors and staff with an unexpected bonus.

Blue Reef Aquarium’s Leanna Lawson said: “The aquarium has been the venue for lots of different events and activities over the years; ranging from birthday parties to wedding proposals; however this is the first time it has both inspired and played host to a dance routine.

“The girls did a fantastic job and it must have been quite daunting to have to perform in public in such an unusual location.

“Everyone who saw their performance was very impressed and it’s great to see how the marine environment can inspire such a diverse range of artistic expression,” she added.
