Cystitis is a common bladder problem that affects as many as one in five women. Men do also get cystitis but it is far more common in women, in part because the journey to the outside world is that much shorter, making it easier for bacteria to spread. In men, cystitis is often associated with Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH). Usually the first indication that something’s wrong is the need to visit the bathroom more frequently, which, let’s face it, often hurts and never quite gives relief.

 

As well as the constant urge to pee and a painful burning sensation when you do pee, cystitis symptoms can also include pain or pressure in your lower belly, you may feel sick or achy (backache is common) and your pee may be darker or smell stronger than usual.

 

So, what to do?

 

Our diets are too often full of things that can irritate the bladder, cause inflammation or reduce our immune system and allow infection to take hold. Maintaining a generally healthy and balanced diet will help keep your body strong and more efficient at protecting itself from infection.

 

Increase your fluid intake. We lose about 1.5 litres of water a day just by breathing, sweating and going to the loo. Just to remain in balance you need to drink at least 1.5 litres a day but this will vary according to your weight and general activity. Drinking more water helps dilute urine, meaning it is less concentrated and acidic, and therefore less likely to irritate the bladder. Nasty bacteria love stagnant urine. By drinking more water you empty your bladder more frequently, leaving bacteria with little time to multiply. Aim for at least 2 litres of still water a day.

 

What about cranberry juice? Ok, so cranberries were always going to make the edit. Researchers believe they prevent bacteria from sticking to the walls of the bladder, which makes it difficult for an infection to grow there. But it’s not as simple as all that. Cranberry juice is very slightly acidic and can sometimes irritate the bladder. Go too sweet and you feed the bacteria at the root of the infection. Biotta Mountain Cranberry Juice is naturally strong and sour in flavour, and contains handpicked wild mountain cranberries that are rich in phytonutrients known to help support bladder health. But if you’re not keen on the taste of cranberry juice, A.Vogel’s Cranberry Complex Tablets are a concentrated source of freshly harvested cranberries. Another bladder-friendly berry is Uva-ursi or Bearberry. A small woody shrub native to America and Europe, Uva-ursi is a favourite bear snack – hence the catchy alias. What’s the link between cystitis and immune health? Your overall health and immune system can influence how quickly you recover from cystitis and recurrent cystitis can be a sign your immune system is struggling.

 

Make sure your diet is balanced by cooking from scratch and incorporate lots of fresh fruits and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants. If an infection is present a diet rich in fruit and vegetables should also help to reduce the acidity of your urine. Spinach, kale and broccoli are good options. They are great for your whole body, are packed with vital nutrients and they help to support the immune system.

 

Probiotic and prebiotic foods can also help with bladder health. Plain, natural yoghurt is packed full of good bacteria, which can help keep bad bacteria in check and reduce the chances of an infection taking hold. Other food sources of probiotics include tempeh, miso, kefir and sauerkraut.

Cut caffeine and alcohol from your diet during an infection, as these irritate the bladder and will worsen symptoms of pain and burning. They may also cause recovery from infection to slow down.

 

It is important to urinate as much as you need; holding on when you need to go to the toilet can cause bacteria to build up in the urinary tract, making you more prone to infection. If you are suffering from an infection, this is particularly important, as this will encourage the bacteria to leave the system.

 

Finally, chemicals in personal care products, such as intimate washes and soaps, can also cause cystitis so keep these to a minimum or seek out natural alternatives.

 

If symptoms do not improve within 48 hours or are recurrent, or if there is blood in your urine or a fever is present, consult your GP or healthcare provider.

Halloween is a time to release your inner ghoul, but without careful preparation your skin might end up a horror story too.

Halloween make up, hair dynes, costumes and body art can all be triggers for skin flares, break outs and contact dermatitis reactions.

Dermatologist Dr Eve Melegh offers four tips to safeguard your skin against becoming a victim of Halloween havoc.

 

  1. Eye Frights

Most Halloween make up centres around the eyes in order to create monstrous effects. The use of fake eye lashes, coloured contact lenses and heavy eye make are common to create many ghoulish impressions.

However, the skin around the eye is particularly sensitive and so reactions to heavy costume make up, particularly dark colours, glitters and the glue in fake lashes are common and can trigger eye contact dermatitis or a flare of blepharitis, which can leave eyes red, itchy and inflamed for weeks after the horrors of Halloween night are over.

Protecting eyes from the sudden onslaught of Halloween make up can prevent a great deal of discomfort afterwards.

Try Hydrosil Dry Eye Gel (www.hydrosil.co.uk) which is a plant-based light eye gel containing a plant equivalent to steroids to help keep skin around the eyes calm and helps protect it from potential skin reactions to eye make up if applied before the eye make. And then after it has been removed.

  1. Make Up Remover Torment

Make up remover wipes are the worst culprits so when it comes to removing heavy Halloween make up, don’t be tempted to use make up remover wipes.

Instead loosen stubborn make up with a natural facial oil first like rosehip oil. Then use a chemical free cream cleanser to remover the majority of the makeup. Finally, if the skin is still not feeling clean do a double cleanse with a gentle pore cleaning toner. When rinsing out hair dyes, or hair gels and sprays try to avoid using even more chemicals in shampoos as the scalp will already been quite sensitive and reactive after the chemicals in the products that have been use for Halloween hair.

Use a chemical and perfume free shampoo designed for use on sensitive scalps for the first 2-3 washes after Halloween and then use a leave in hair product designed to calm sensitive scalps and repair scalp barrier function which will have been damaged my Halloween hair styles.

Why a Neurodivergence Day? Mind and Body – March 11th

Did you know Neurodivergence is having a mind and body that is different from most of the population in the way people think, learn and process information but also  in physical body issues that can affect the whole body!

So, it is likely to be different in both mind and body to those who are not neurodivergent.

The most exciting and pioneering developments have been in the last few years and with SEDSConnective, the first neurodivergent symptomatic hypermobility charity leading this advocacy not only in Autism but also ADHD, Dyspraxia and TS  and probably more like dyslexia, dycalculia and dysgraphia along with physical pain and dizziness.  A researcher and team at BSMS, Dr Eccles, who is also our Patron, completed more research suggesting that neurodivergent people are more than double  to have joint hypermobility and experience much more pain, dizziness and fatigue than most people.  This is likely due to differences in our connective tissues, like collagen.  We have, as members of SEDSConnective, known this along with so many of our members but have simply not been believed so far.  Can you imagine any other diagnosed conditions where you are not believed?

For education this is also a big issue.  Attendance in schools has been deteriorating particularly for neurodivergent students.   My story is that I left school early, thought dim plus a hypochondriac so left with hardly any qualifications.  Much later on I self studied whilst looking after my ill and neurodivergent children. I realised that so many issues we were facing now were ones I had faced during my lifetime yet,  been dismissed.   As I gained expertise in teaching in all areas, I saw a pattern.  Why were so many students having trouble in school and being home educated, yet not always by choice?

There was not much interest, but I felt sure it was due to body health issues plus social mental and environmental issues. There was no name for it, but I looked further and later new research backed this up.  Physical health is different in neurodivergent people.  It affects us throughout the body from stomach pains so we can’t eat, to bloating so we don’t want to eat sometimes we are considered fussy eaters, bowel, bladder issues, allergy rashes, extreme tiredness, migraines, even anxiety and heart palpitations, dizziness, brain fog and most of all Pain.  Some anxiety may be a physical response due to gravity believe it or not!

For many years now I have presented and written professionally on how so many students were labelled with emotional based school avoidance (EBSA) but listed were nearly all the physical symptoms we now know exists with us! This was before Covid and Post Covid, it was very obvious Long Covid symptoms were very familiar to us.    We were not believed or maybe due to autism or ADHD diagnoses it was assumed only due to social, emotional, environmental or mental causes and nothing to do with the physiology. Yet the head and body are joined up?

We now know not being believed to be ill or injured without evidence of a previous accident or positive test can cause trauma.  We know we tend to MASK pain.   For this reason, we are calling for neurodivergence health to be recognised and not neglected or hidden from policies, agendas, training in education, health, care, work /employment, or travel needs.
