The leader of Arun District Council, Councillor Mrs Gillian Brown has been awarded with Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to Local Government and the community in West Sussex. This is in acknowledgement of her dedication and commitment to Local Government and the community.
Cllr Mrs Brown has been leader of the Council for 12 years and a district councillor since 1991, as well as being a loyal and long-serving member of the Local Government Association (LGA). She has also been a board member of the District Council network since its inception. Mrs Brown previously served on many of their committees and boards, and is a member of the LGA Councillor’s forum and Vice Chairman of the LGA People and Places Board, as well as being an active member of the South East England Council.
In 1978 Mrs Brown co-founded, became the first treasurer and continues to actively support the Aldwick Preservation Society, championing the maintenance and upkeep of the environment in Aldwick village.
Deputy Leader of Arun District Council, Councillor Dudley Wensley, said ‘I am delighted that Cllr Mrs Brown has been recognised for her services to Local Government. I feel honoured to be Deputy Leader of a Council which has been successfully led by Gill for so many years. I am delighted that Gill’s hard work, tenacity, professionalism and dedication to the people of Arun as well as in all her other areas of work in local government and the community, has been recognised.
“On my own behalf and on behalf of the whole Council I would like to congratulate not only Gill on being awarded this OBE but also Mrs Hazel Latus, Chairman of Arun Arts who received a British Empire Medal (BEM).”
Arun District Council also offers congratulations to Tyler Murphy, founder and volunteer of Tylers Trust, on receiving a BEM for services to young people with debilitating illnesses and vulnerable families in West Sussex.
