Following the sell out success at Brighton Festival and spectacular appearance at Soho Theatre London and Latitude Festival live artist Jenny Edbrooke brings Smalls, her most ambitious project to date, to Hastings as part of the Coastal Currents Visual Arts Festival on Saturday 27th August.
Funny, sad, moving and thought provoking, Smalls is an intimate performance that provides a gently challenging insight into the complex world of undergarments, so rarely discussed but so much part of our daily life. Audiences are invited under Jenny’s voluminous skirt – made entirely of bras and knickers – to discover its hidden gems and explore the taboos, myths and mysteries of our most private items of clothing in a multi sensory experience which mixes sound installation with live performance. This brief experience may change the way you view your smalls forever!
As usual with Jenny’s work, Smalls delves into personal histories and things that make even her feel uncomfortable – with the aim of making individuals more encouraged and inspired by the sharing of intimate stories, habits and related treasures. She says: “ My aim is to unite and entertain people while continuing in my quest of making sense of the world in which we live – a task both for myself and for anyone who engages with the work.”
In this way, Smalls isn’t small at all; it’s huge, encompassing a range of opinions and ideas. Jenny’s woven undergarments are her way of binding together all these possibilities and thoughts.
Smalls will be part of 'Spotlight' an ambitious evening of bold and specially commissioned performances, installations and interactive activities that will launch the Coastal Currents Visual Arts Festival and will feature established and emerging local, regional and international artists developing a range of exciting interventions from installation, live performance, moving image, sculpture, and sonic & light. Spotlight will parade along the seafront from St Leonards to Hastings on Saturday 27 August from 4pm - 10pm and Jenny will be performing Smalls at the Stade from 7pm and entrance is free.
