Rambert brings rock and roll to Brighton

Rambert brings rock and roll swagger to Theatre Royal Brighton this month with a spectacular evening’s entertainment, featuring the music of the Rolling Stones in Rooster. This enduringly popular piece will be accompanied by a bold new work of dance theatre and a pair of modern classics.

Rooster is Christopher Bruce’s electrifying celebration of the swinging Sixties where sharp-suited, snake-hipped men and strong, sassy women perform virtuoso courtship dances to some of the Stones’ most famous tunes, including Not Fade Away, Paint It Black, As Tears Go By, Sympathy for the Devil and Little Red Rooster. Rooster was created by former Rambert artistic director Christopher Bruce in 1991, and these performances represent its highly anticipated return to the UK stage after 13 years.

Barak Marshall’s The Castaways is a new dance work that is vivid and theatrical.   Punctuated with humour and catchy tunes, it tells the story of the trials and triumphs of 12 lost souls thrown together. Set and costume design are by Jon Bausor, who designed the London 2012 Paralympics Opening Ceremony. Barak Marshall choreographs all over the world and is particularly well-known in Israel and the US, fusing traditional and contemporary styles.

The third piece of the evening will be the short, sharp solo, Dutiful Ducks, first created for Michael Clark in 1982 and choreographed by Richard Alston to the tongue-twisting soundtext of the same name by Charles Amirkhanian. It will be accompanied by a rare opportunity to see Merce Cunningham’s Sounddance.

Made in 1975 by the late master of contemporary dance, this ‘ecstatic opus’ was inspired by the words of writer James Joyce, and the tiny racing life seen under a microscope and features an improvised electronic score that is different each night.

An evening’s entertainment that celebrates everything that Rambert does best: premiering exciting new dance alongside classic masterpieces and showcasing world class dancers, all accompanied by live music.

Rambert Dance Company appears at Theatre Royal Brighton from Wed 26th Feb – Sat 1st Mar with evening performances at 7.30pm and a Thursday matinee at 1.30pm. To book tickets call 0844 871 7650 or log on to www.atgtickets.com/brighton
