But when his fiancée finds him with a 17 year old, the Lords detect a chink, however many official denials he makes. In a week where we are surrounded by politics, vote with your feet for some light-hearted relief.
W S Gilbert’s witty lyrics and Sullivan’s memorable music results in a stinging satire of the House of Lords, the political party system and legal institutions, as relevant today as when it was written 130 years ago.
Corruption, self-interest, lies and deceit in the Houses of Parliament will not surprise many people. Adding a shepherd, a love story and a host of fairy creatures, including a feisty fairy queen ensues an intriguing and a magical night of entertainment. Eastbourne Gilbert & Sullivan Society put their own spin on a show that regularly polls as one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s favourite operettas.
Eastbourne Gilbert and Sullivan Society will be presenting Iolanthe at the Devonshire Park Theatre during election week (Tuesday 5th to Saturday 9th May). The week is very appropriate as the story of this popular G & S operetta is Gilbert’s satirical look at politics with the House of Lords up in arms because Strephon is elected to parliament and he now threatens to make the Lords sit through the grouse and salmon season! Add to this a battle of the sexes and your favourite (or otherwise) political party and mayhem ensues. In a week where we will be surrounded by politics, come and join the ladies from fairyland and the political gentlemen and vote with your feet for some light-hearted relief!
The President of the G & S Society is Brian Murphy and he has sent his good wishes for the production of his favourite offering by Gilbert & Sullivan. Evening performances commence at 7.45 pm with matinees on Wednesday and Saturday at 2.30pm. Please note that there is no evening performance on Wednesday.
