The only time I find myself listening to the radio these days is when I’m driving. The car is where I like to sing, some people may prefer the shower, each to their own.
I have six programmable stations on my car stereo, and I have recently found myself frequently changing the station during my journeys. I might start up with the local radio station, mostly eighties pop, which I get bored of after a while. They play the same thing on rotation all day, and if I have to listen to a certain song from Dirty Dancing once more I’m in danger of losing my temper.
When this happens I change it to Radio one, I like to think I can keep my music taste current, however there is far too much talking. I don’t feel I’m old enough (although I’m sure those who study the demographics for the radio world probably do), for Radio two, and most definitely not ready for Radio four. So my point is, where is the radio station for those of us who like a bit of good, current music, not drum and base, and not death metal, just honest to goodness, bands and singer songwriters?
Well as far as I know, there isn’t one. I know there is a whole world out there with digital radio, but I don’t have this in my car. Where are the “pirate” stations of the past? Where is that one rebel dj on a boat off the coast of Hastings, playing music I like?
I put it to you that we need to campaign, campaign for real music. Not just old songs, not just new songs, but really good songs? The realisation that, I’m not old, I’m not young, I’m middle of the road!
