An In”spectre” Calls

spectre of deathIt is a known fact in our life that at sometime we will all die. Yes I know not a very attractive thought , but none the less a very true one. Of course we don’t know how, where or when it will happen, and perhaps that makes life more interesting. More importantly it should focus us to count our blessings and make the most of every day. To that end, and much earlier than in most of my previous articles, I present my first poem because it surely sums it all up. On the back cover of my second book it is called “A Life or Early Death”

A Life or Early Death

Death’s spectre is above us

Yes, we are all marked to die.

Only the manner of our living

Will separate how we try.

Spending all our time in fear

A constriction with no fun.

And cower in the shadows,

So rather than this being a morbid article I want it to be a recognition of our lives and positive thinking. Some people may prefer not to even contemplate their passing, but I think that is like trying to run away from the inevitable and maybe denying the less attractive side of life exists. That is exactly where as a “views of life poet” I lurk to hopefully nudge people to have their own extended observations on life and all of its aspects!

Obviously we all have different experiences in life, some have more fortune than others, or maybe make it work better, but overall there is usually somebody else worse off. For that point I will leave it to another poem, “Home Comforts” to suggest some thoughts. This poem is from my second book and is another poem of four included this month.

Home Comforts

You must really count your blessings

I do that each and every day,

For there’s always someone worse off

No matter what you think or say!

We live closely in our own world

So don’t see much else around,

And very little affects us here

Thus we sleep safe and sound.

No war now overshadows us

Earthquake, drought or heavy weather.

In fact if we get deep heavy snow

There’s panic running hell for leather!

We have no major killing diseases

Of course cancer threatens us all,

But that’s a worldwide problem too

Thus our health concerns are small.

Well apart that is from obesity

That will be the new fatal killer,

Unless people stop eating fast food

And go easy on their stomach filler.

We live closely in our own world

So don’t see much else around,

And very little affects us here

Thus we sleep safe and sound.

So rest safely in your beds tonight,

For it’s only you that cause distress

And shock waves in your tranquil pond,

Thus why would we settle for less!

Well after that and we are all thanking our lucky stars, we do have to remember that life will ensure it will not be a straight and narrow road. Yes, the poet is changing the angle slightly again, but please allow as it goes with the reasons for writing poems.

So our proverbial road of life may, no definitely will, get bumpy along the way, and how we deal with that is of interest. Many say that we get awarded or lose points for our behaviour and actions rather like a boxing match, and these all get totted up at our end for some decision. I have no idea about that or in fact any intention to conjecture so will choose to run for poetic cover with the next poem called “Even Out” which is from my third published book.

Even Out

The roller coaster ride of life

Will test us one and all,

Just when you think you’ve won

That’s the very time you’ll fall.

So up you get and start again

Sorry, but perhaps much wiser,

To continue on your road again

Having fully cleared your visor.

For it’s best to see the road ahead

To ensure no fall or trip,

As without a doubt you will err

If your awareness you let slip.

Gleeful shouts you’ve got it right

Can only lead to sorrow,

For any complacency in this world

Will bring sadness in the morrow.

The wise man says that if you’ve won

And sport the victor’s crown,

Be modest with people going up

You may meet them coming down!

The roller coaster ride of life

Will test us one and all,

For just when you think you’ve won

That’s the very time you’ll fall.

So take any successes in your stride

And stand proud if you should miss,

For if you have done your very best

No one can give any more than this.

Getting to the end now so I guess it is a sort of “round up” time that I love and probably goes back to my time working in psychiatry when we rounded up everything with could be, possibly, maybe and we can’t say for sure. No, but having said that it wasn’t as escapist as it sounds for like most things in life it is all about how things are dealt with, for whilst a broken leg is evident and probably the treatment for it too, our minds and attitudes are different. Over to you then, but I’m ending with an aptly named and content themed poem entitled “Round Trip” that is again from my second book. Oh yeah, and watch out for that spectre behind you!!!

Round Trip

Time moves on and passes by

As I look back down the years,

To see good times and heartache

But a lot more fun than tears.

We can’t always control our lives

And why our world has cracked,

But your manner and character

Are judged by how you react!

So looking back with a sadness

At the times you regret or lost,

Will only waste and frustrate

Time you already want to accost.

Thus best to count your blessings

And good things that you’ve got,

For even if you’re struggling by

To many others you’ll have a lot.

Time moves on and passes by

As I look back down the years,

To see good times and heartache

But a lot more fun than tears.

Of course trials and tribulations

Can easily make you go insane.

But when I’m due to pass away,

Please can I go round again?
