Worthing parkrun reached a fantastic milestone on Saturday 1st April, as it saw its 10,000th finisher of the weekly run cross the line in just its 41st occurrence, which just goes to highlight the popularity of this free weekly event.
The 10,000th finisher was Colin Turner from the Worthing Striders running club and Colin finished the run in a time of 33 minutes flat.
In the 41 different runs that have taken place up to and including 1st April, Worthing parkrun has produced some very impressive stats. There have been 2,769 different runners take part giving a total of 10,072 runs, with 53 different male and female winners over those runs. A total running time of 193 days, 7 hours, 34 minutes and 29 secs has been achieved, although the average run time is 27 minutes and 38 seconds – the total distance run is 50,360 kilometres or one and a half times around the Earth!
The biggest attendance recorded at any one event is 420 runners, whilst there is an average of over 250 runners per week. However, the event continues to go from strength to strength and is now regularly seeing over 300 runners each week.
Regular run volunteer, who just happens to be South Downs Leisure’s CEO Duncan Anderson, was understandably very impressed with the achievement, stating: “This really is remarkable! When we started to plan parkrun in Worthing, we hoped that it would be well attended but never envisaged it being so popular quite so quickly. It really is great to see so many different people come along each week and even better when we get to share their successes, from first runs to beating a PB.”
Duncan went on to say: “We are lucky to have such a great team of volunteers that help to facilitate the run for so many people on a weekly basis; we wouldn’t be able to do it without them.”
Anyone can join in the 5km run along the seafront, all that is asked is that you register online before your first run, to get yourself a barcode, then ensure you take along your printed barcode to scan in at the end of each run. The run takes place at 9:00am each Saturday and entrants meet on the green next to Splashpoint Leisure Centre before setting off.
