A free Young Carers Fun Day will be held during half-term at St Paul’s Catholic College in Burgess Hill on Tuesday 24 October. This event is for young carers aged 6-15 years living in the Burgess Hill area. This will be the 50TH event to be held and the event will be a celebration for the young people and all those involved in organising the events. The Mustard Seed Café has generously agreed to provide a celebratory cake for the event.
Young carers are children and young people who help look after a member of the family who has a long-term illness or disability, mental health problems or is misusing drugs or alcohol. They may have direct caring responsibilities or they may be someone whose life is affected as a result of living with someone who has these conditions.
With so many adult responsibilities, young carers often miss out on opportunities that other children have to play and learn. The Fun Day will provide an opportunity for the young carers to have fun and try out a range of activities, including cake making and decorating, sports, battle tag archery, photo frame decorating, playing the steel drums, t- shirt creations, arts and crafts and much more.
Burgess Hill young carer, Niamh said: “The young carers events are great because we can go and meet new people who have gone through a similar experience to yourself. Whenever I go, there’s always a friendly face. There are always volunteers who give up their time to help us and I’m really grateful to them. They are what make it possible! I go on a day out and there is always something for me, and everyone else, to do. Whether it’s arts and crafts, tennis, cake making or pond dipping. We will all have a GREAT time!”
A range of free young carers Fun Days and outings are organised throughout the year by Burgess Hill Youth and Burgess Hill Town Council. Additional support for the October Fun day is being provided by St Paul’s Catholic College, Crossroads Care South Central and Mid Sussex Active.
