Nature: 1) Man

As I considered the topic or theme for my next monthly article I thought about writing on “nature”, but what a massive but lovely subject to take on! Then I recalled a couple of years or so ago I did my article, or should I say articles, on the theme love. Another huge subject, so I split it into three differing parts in non consecutive months which worked out quite well.
Therefore I am going to do the same with nature as I tackle this big subject as well, so starting with “nature of man”, then “animal nature” and finish with the “beauty of nature” to round up. Quite a challenge with this, but never one to shirk a challenge, so here I go with it…

By coincidence, (or was it that I’m pretty good a?), yes a poem entitled “Nature of Man” from my 3rd book.

Nature of Man

As well as my sardonic observations
And cryptic views of life’s things,
I also see nature’s wonders
Like beautiful creatures with wings,
Or amazing life all shapes and sizes
Living plants in varied hues,
Filling us with awe and amazement
And our eyes with special views.

Mr Attenborough awakened minds
Before all closed to planet Earth,
So now we can be astounded
At stunning wildlife giving birth,
With expanding growing numbers
Living with and around us.
Some we see and take for granted
Others just live without fuss.

But though I dearly love to see nature
My main interest is the common man,
Who with knowledge, or perhaps none
Is killing our world each way he can!

So that is one aspect on the nature of man, but of course it is a manifold subject and I guess that like many things in life we only concentrate on, or get to see, the down sides. Bad news and disasters sell more papers and perhaps even “appeals” to some people, but again like many things, we must keep an open mind?
Well I am not going to “philosophise” (lol for once?) on why that is, and on all the various “natures” of folk, and for this article let my poems do most of the talking. You will obviously have your own views, think of examples, make your mind up and then you can fill in any blanks.

Poets and Scrollers

The news comes flooding into our lives
From places nationally or world wide.
Amusing, frightening or tragically sad,
Yet from it all, it’s hard to hide.

Graphic images often feature large
As the world comes to our door.
Exposing to us the very worst of man,
As the news channels try to explore
All aspects of life to fully scrutinise
Under a glaringly microscope.
Making you angry, laugh or cry
Or possibly give up all hope.

So how do we deal with a bombardment
Reeking havoc on mind and senses?
Confronting us with with manic thoughts
That causes mass upset and offences.
Some will merely just look away
Denying they have seen, or know it,
But others take it all to heart
And most likely they’re a poet.

For poets tend to write on things
With strong thoughts and burning phrases,
That encapsulates and rams it home
To the indifferent who it amazes.

So having seen it put into words
These ostriches or rock and rollers,
Still prefer to avoid any sympathy
By being just news reel scrollers.
Who turn a blind eye to sad events
Until something happens to them too.
When a poet will then come forward
To comfort their tragic view.

One view there then, and that can be compared to another of my poems “Don’t Write it Off” from my 5th book, largely reviewing (at that time) posturing between powerful nations. Mind you that always goes on doesn’t it?

Don’t Write it Off

I suppose I now have a mission
With my written thoughts in verse,
For as I scan the worldwide scene
I fear it’s all getting worse.

For it seems there are wars everywhere
With the world once more on the brink.
So great leaders please take care
And give lots of time to think,
Of amazing wonders, good, and values
At new risk from conceited power.
Which can lead to mass destruction
In much less than an hour.

Of course there’s been great wars before
And yet somehow we still survived.
Learning from the mushroom cloud
That insured we have now arrived,
At a state of chilling acceptance
Of just what harm man can do.
But now it seems we must again
Test out if it’s all true!

So what use then is my puny verse
That on a world scale’s just a jot?
But for me it’s hugely important,
To give our opinions than to just not
Do anything or our make a protest,
As generations have done before.
When on monumental occasions
It did bring an end to war.

So I will scribe away my thoughts
To let my feelings be known,
As you won’t succeed, if you don’t try
Thus I may not stand alone!

Put against this is a more basic and simple part of “human nature”, gosh the poetic ideas are flooding in now, (LOL, perhaps I should write a book? Oh I have, five, and will be six very soon), but this is a particular favourite of mine. A favourite dislike that is…..

Genuine

There are two groups mostly in our lives
With people that will, and those that won’t,
So the one’s that won’t you cope with
Unlike the “say they will” who don’t.

For if someone won’t do something
However much you may ask,
You know just where you stand
And must then undertake that task.
But other folks will gladly fawn
When saying “leave it all to me”,
So you are left high and dry
When there are no results to see.

Now we know it’s easy to talk
With little action to show,
For what they have fully promised
Is likely to be a no go.
Unlike the stiff resistive
Who just prefer to take no part,
As they have a selfish side
With no interest to even start.

So give to me a stalwart
Who will spend life trying
To succeed and really help you,
Without a thought of lying,
About what they have to do
Despite hardship and a test.
So you will have to admire them
As they always do their best.

Now surely that is a human nature we all can agree on as it couldn’t “possibly” be one of you mentioned there could it? No of course not, but I’ll believe you, OOOooooops another lie?

Game to Lose

Your game of life is often played
In front of the watching crowd,
Who see your each and every move
As you stand small, or very proud.

So the fence sitters will only watch
How others cope with their game.
And decrying all those who’ve lost
Whilst jealous of the victors fame.

For if you won’t take a part in life
You can deride and mock at will,
All those who try to do their best
To enjoy life, and so they’ll fulfil.

So that’s why I have strongly felt
It’s far better to have tried and lost.
For if you won’t compete or try
You’ll much later count your cost,
Of just cowardly sitting at the side,
Never taking any risk or chance.
Making you a lonely, boring case,
And not worth a second glance!

But by getting stuck in having a go
It’s just possible you may win out.
And that must be so much better
Than not to know a winners shout.

So our cosy spectators of the world
Will always rue not being brave,
And missed the warmth of joining in
Thus taking a sadness to their grave!

Quite a strange part of human nature there again then, but as I’ve written on it it just has to be true, OR have I invoked poetic licence with it? Gosh all these questions and thoughts for you, I really hope you are not too worn out?

Well as I truly am a positive person, reflect on my blessings, strongly believe good will conquer evil, (that gets a bit shaken at times), and look on the bright side of life, I am going to finish with a happy and upbeat poem. Please enjoy……

The Friend

Strong is the friend who stands by you
When others turn aside
The minute they’re asked to help
They are off to run and hide.

True is the friend who stands by you
In times of your demise,
Always there to chat and cheer
And make sense of all the lies.

Humble is the friend who stands by you
And can’t see what he’s done
By being right alongside you
With no thought to cut and run.

Loyal is the friend who stands by you
Even if he feels you’re wrong,
And tries to mediate a deal
To leave you standing strong.

Caring is the friend who stands by you
When all blows up in your face,
Then will resolve and tend your hurt
And play down the disgrace.

What have you done to earn this friend
Who shelters from the fame?
I suspect that when he was down
You stood by him just the same!
