Arun District Council share VE day plans

Friday 8 May 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (commonly known as VE Day).

This year, the government moved the May bank holiday to VE Day to allow the nation to remember the sacrifice so many made in the fight against fascism. This was of course, before the Coronavirus pandemic struck.

As a council, and as individuals, we had been planning to celebrate this momentous day along with many community groups who were hoping to run their own commemorative activities. Given the restrictions due to Covid-19, sadly these have all had to be cancelled and we are asking the public to celebrate in style – at home!

The government have provided some ideas and activities for you to do at home to mark this day and of course, Her Majesty The Queen will be sending a message to the nation. You could perhaps follow a timetable throughout the day to make sure that this important event receives the respect it deserves:

11.00               2 minutes silence on your doorstep

15.00               Churchill speech being shown on the BBC

16.00               afternoon tea – sandwiches, scones and jam!

18.00               raise a glass on your doorstep and a long distance ‘cheers’ with neighbours or on a video call with friends and family

19.45               Clap 4 VE 75  – VE day clapping to mark the year 1945

21.00               join the nationwide sing-a-long ‘We’ll meet again’ with the Royal British Legion after the Queen’s address

Cllr Mike Northeast has set up Clap 4 VE 75 which is all about thanking the heroes of 1945 in the way we have no become accustomed too – clapping.  This was inspired by his father, 99 year old D-Day veteran, Stanley Northeast. You can join the Facebook page Clap 4 VE day 75 to find out more.

Here at Arun District Council we are having to limit our celebrations, but it doesn’t mean that our respect for all those who served and our commemoration of this day is any less heartfelt.  Working within the guidance on social distancing and sensible practise, we will be laying a wreath at the War Memorials in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton and also flying the Union Flag from our buildings and our foreshore masts.

We know how important this day is, but please, respect those that fought and do not be tempted to share this day with friends and family.  Stay at home, celebrate with the members of your household only and be safe.
