Looking After Your Skin

I love a beauty product but let’s be honest, beautiful skin really comes from within. Spending money and attention on what goes into your body is so much better than £££ on beauty products, Botox or fillers which simply cover up the problem.

Your face reflects your diet and lifestyle. If you don’t take care of your body properly and abuse it with a poor diet, alcohol, drugs, late nights, and overworking it will eventually show on your face.

Here below are a few tips which can help improve your skin from the inside out.

 We are what we eat

A healthy, balanced diet is the key to beautiful skin but so many of us still don’t consider what we eat to affect how we look.

Things to avoid or cut out

Foods which are processed, high in sugar, fat or salt, including fizzy drinks, coffee, alcohol, fried foods, refined sugar, white pasta, bread and rice, and ready meals.

Foods that benefit the skin

Cooking your meals from scratch using fresh ingredients is always better for you.

Foods that contain Vitamin A are great for the skin as it speeds up healing, supports the skin’s immune system and helps to hydrate the skin effectively.

Foods to eat include sweet potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, squash, red peppers, and dark green leafy vegetables like broccoli, kale, spinach, and watercress.

Consider that 50% of your diet should be vegetables. To get more vegetables into your body you can include a vegetable smoothie a day and use superfood powders like wheatgrass which is anti-ageing.

Herbs to add to your cooking are rosemary, basil, parsley and thyme and use nori flakes or himilayan salt to flavour.

Essential fatty acids, which are your omega-3 are fundamental for healthy, beautiful skin.

Excellent sources include wild salmon, sardines, mackerel, nuts like almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, and pumpkin, sunflower, sesame and chia seeds, avocados, and wheat germ.

Vitamin C is a great antioxidant and helps produce collagen. Include more kiwi fruit, sweet potatoes, berries, oranges, papaya, broccoli, kale, tomatoes in your diet and take a vitamin C supplement daily.

Look after your liver

Your liver is the major organ of detoxification. A healthy liver will give you glowing skin. If you overload it with toxins, it won’t be able to do its job properly. Too much alcohol will make you age and is the liver’s no.1 enemy.

Smoking

We all know how damaging smoking is to the lungs. Well, it’s just as detrimental to the skin. Heavy smokers will develop bags under their eyes, lines around the mouth and dull, grey skin, so its a good idea to stop.

Sun exposure

Although a little sun exposure is good for vitamin D absorption, over exposure will damage your skin resulting in dryness, wrinkles, age spots, and loss of elasticity. Avoid sunbathing from 12-3pm and protect yourself with a good sunblock and a hat.

Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate! (and moisturise)

It is so important to drink lots of good quality filtered water. Water keeps the skin plump and supple. If you fail to drink enough water you will have dull, tired looking skin and you will start to get fine lines. Aim for two litres daily.

The wonders of Green Tea

Green Tea has so many antioxidants that it is good for us inside and out. It has been found to delay aging, protect the skin from UV rays, improve skin tone, and reduce acne. You can use it on your skin as well as internally.

I would love to hear from you if have made changes to your diet or lifestyle and saw and improvement in your skin and looks.
