The Sussex Newspaper readers with elderly neighbours are being encouraged to keep an eye on them with cold weather forecasted to affect West Sussex over the next few days.
Cold weather can increase the health risks to vulnerable people by increasing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, lung illnesses, influenza and other diseases. Some groups are particularly susceptible to the effects of very cold weather such as older people, babies and young children and people with pre-existing medical conditions.
People are being encouraged to do their bit by checking on vulnerable and elderly neighbours.
West Sussex County Council leader Louise Goldsmith said: “If you know someone who might need a bit of extra help such as neighbours and elderly relatives and friends please check they are okay.”
Tips below to ensure you stay safe during the cold weather:
- Have plenty of hot food and drinks.
- Wear lots of thin layers (clothes made from cotton, wool or fleecy fibres).
- Homes should be heated to the right temperature: at least 18°C (65˚F)
- If you can’t heat all the rooms you use, heat the living room during the day and your bedroom just before you go to bed.
- Check on elderly and vulnerable relatives and neighbours.
