Simon Kirby, the Member of Parliament for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, has welcomed new figures showing 289 fewer people in Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance compared with May 2014 – a 20% per cent drop.
Unemployment has fallen by 52% in Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven since 2010.
Nationally, overall unemployment has fallen nearly 350,000 in the last year to its lowest level since August 2008 and long-term unemployment fell to its lowest level in more than 5 years.
The proportion of the workforce nationally claiming unemployment benefits is now at its lowest level since 1975 – down to 2.3 per cent. And the number of people claiming the main out-of-work benefits has fallen by more than 1 million since 2010 – the lowest level since 1982.
Simon Kirby said: “289 fewer people relying on Jobseeker’s Allowance in Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven than this time last year is excellent news, particularly alongside the news that wages are rising at the fastest rate since 2007 and that there are a record number of women in employment. This means more people in work, with the security of a job and a regular pay packet. ”
“The Government’s economic plan is working and, whilst there is certainly no room for complacency, these latest figures are to be warmly welcomed.”
