And the winner is…

The Implant Centre is recognised for the 4th time as the BEST DENTAL PRACTICE IN THE UK

The team travelled up to Birmingham to pick up not only Dental Practice of the Year South, but then to be given the highest accolade of Best Dental Practice in the UK when all practices were put head to head in this final category. This is the 4th time we have achieved this making us unique as a practice. It is so great to hear from so many of our patients who are delighted to know they are cared for by such a recognised practice.
The celebrations were well deserved by all the team at The Implant Centre (Hove and Haywards’ Heath), who work tirelessly to make every patient journey as exclusive and enjoyable as possible.

TEETH OR TREAT…
It’s that time of year we all love when the world goes crazy for treats of the confectionary kind and houses are loaded with multipacks of sugary delights. Latest figures show tooth decay rates at an all-time high with a quarter of 5-year olds suffering, and tooth decay cited as the main reason for hospital admissions among five to nine-year-olds in England last year. With this in mind and seeing horror stories of severe tooth decay in patients of all ages due to sugar consumption, we have put together a guide to help minimise the damage this Halloween.

TOP 5 WORST HALLOWEEN TREATS
Solid sugar dummies
Tangfastic (or other sour sweets covered in sugar)
Skittles
Lollipops
Toffees

DO
• DO enjoy Halloween and let them collect all the sweets and have an amazing time – it is once a year fun
• Eat sweet treats straight after a meal and try to consume sugary food in one go rather than eating throughout the day. It’s the constant supply of sugar to the bacteria which cause decay that is the problem when grazing all day… Get the kids to eat all the Halloween sweets in one go, don’t let them last a week
• Brush teeth before eating sweets and then rinse with mouthwash afterwards. Then brush again one hour after consumption
• Try to get kids to eat sugar free gum as the last treat – this works so unbelievably well to help ‘clean’ the teeth
• Use a toothpaste with fluoride in
• Opt for sugar free sweets and ideally sugar free gum
• Choose chocolate over sweets, the plain kind (no caramel or chewy centre) and ideally dark chocolate for the lowest sugar content. Chocolate clears from the mouth quicker than sweets.

DON’T
• Brush teeth immediately after consuming sugary or acidic foods as you can end up brushing tiny particles of enamel away
• Don’t rinse out after brushing – spit and walk away
• Eat sour sweets with sugar coatings, the acid and sugar combination is the worst for teeth
• Eat soft/sticky sweets as they can be the most damaging as they can get stuck interdentally in the gaps between teeth
• Offer raisins as a sweet but healthy alternative to sweets- they are just as bad as sweets when it comes to teeth- high sugar content and stick to the teeth

PATIENT OF THE MONTH
Charlotte had always been proud of her smile but, aged just 23, whilst on holiday with friends she slipped in the bathroom and fell straight onto her beautiful front teeth. Three of her four upper incisors were very badly damaged, one being knocked out completely. She was devastated. Initially she was given a denture to replace the missing tooth, and her dentist did everything possible to patch up the broken ones. Over subsequent months though, her damaged teeth discoloured and her gums receded. She found the denture acutely embarrassing too, and simply stopped smiling.

Fortunately, her best friend’s mother had received treatment at The Implant Centre in Hayward’s Heath and was sure we could help Charlotte. With the considerable damage Charlotte had suffered to bone, teeth and gums, we all knew that this was going to be a challenging case and were as delighted as she was with the spectacular results. When we fitted her final implant bridge and she saw it in the mirror for the first time, Charlotte’s confidence flooded back. She could be proud of her beautiful smile once again…
