For over 15 years I’ve been helping adults, kids and business owners understand the powerful connection between the mind and body, so they can make better choices, control emotions and feel healthier and happier about life. I teach Yoga, Tai Chi, Qigong, Kids Confidence and Mindfulness Meditation. Working alongside my husband and mind/body expert Ian Fox we provide advanced communication techniques and Mental Toughness skills to Corporates and Executives.
I’m author and co-author of books, DVDs and training programs on the subject, as well as a contributor to the Guardian Small Business Network, and been featured on Radio and in business publications worldwide. I’m co-founder of the Mindfulness Meditation Zone – the one-stop place for mindfulness living and practical meditation.
Stress, pressure, information overload and multi-tasking are what 21st century living seems to be about. A society caught up in the distraction of technology and a mind preoccupied with thinking about a past you can’t change or the future that hasn’t arrived yet. Trouble is most of this takes us away form living in the moment and enjoying the now.
I can personally relate to this because in a former life I was very much caught up in the thick of the corporate bubble, stressed to the max managing a large call centre team with extreme deadlines, then having to deal with the life changing experience of redundancy and deciding to work for myself.
Mindfulness is growing in popularity in the UK, because it offers powerful ways to manage stress and control your emotions. It’s touted by many high profile celebrities as an effective way to cope with the stresses and pressures of living in the world today.
Many people have the misconception that it’s sitting cross legged, blanking the mind pretending their problems don’t exist – when that’s not how Mindfulness works at all. It’s not a belief system, more an outlook on life and way of using your mind and thoughts. It’s far more than just positive thinking. It’s a “be here now” approach to life allowing you to look at things differently, and when you change the way you look at things, what you look at changes.
So what about that worry that never materialised, or the concern that never came to anything? That’s how the mind can distort time, reality and perception. Thoughts can often create a deception of perception; most things in life take place only in your mind!
In my column each month I’ll share with you some useful mindfulness living tips – the actual practical things that you can apply everyday to overcome stress, manage life-pressures and find inner peace. From time to time I’ll focus on specific areas such as mental toughness for stressed out business owners, relaxation techniques for worried kids, tools for busy mums, etc. Simple and practical techniques, which can be applied easily into everyday life, no matter who you are, what you do or where you are right now. Given the choice I’m sure you’d prefer to feel happier, less worried and feel healthier, than being stuck in your mind.
It is my wish that you find my column interesting, insightful, helpful and inspirational in giving you many practical, real-life tips to enjoying life in the present moment.
