Author talks at Shoreham Library

As part of West Sussex Library Service’s ‘Talk About Reading’ month in October, Shoreham Library will be hosting two local author events.

• On Tuesday 3 October local author Bernard Hall and his wife Teresa will talk about their own experience self-publishing Bernard’s novel ‘Miss Perfect’, offering practical advice into the many varied aspects involved in the process. This will be an invaluable event for anyone considering self-publishing their work and looking for support and advice as they navigate the benefits and pitfalls of the self-publishing process, whether it be novels, short stories, poetry or non-fiction.

Bernard’s novel is a humorous story set in a gritty town in the north-east of England between the Falklands War and the miners’ strike. Two middle-aged people, surrounded by ‘young people nowadays’, find ways of making sense of life, love and the meaning of happiness.

• On Tuesday 10 October the Library will welcome local author Liz Coward, alongside 102-year-old war veteran William Earl, who will be talking about their book ‘Blood and Bandages: Fighting for life in the RAMC Field Ambulance 1940-1946’ to raise the awareness of the crucial role played by the Field Ambulances during World War Two. William was a 26-year-old chemist’s assistant when his call-up papers arrived and his life changed forever. ‘Blood and Bandages’ recounts William’s experiences in the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) treating, collecting and evacuating wounded soldiers from the frontline in places such as Enfidaville, Salerno, Anzio and the Gothic Line. Author Liz Coward has written his moving story with extracts from his letters home, original photographs, training manuals and official war diaries.

Copies of Miss Perfect and Blood and Bandages will be available to buy at the events (cash only).

Both talks start at 7pm at Shoreham Library, St Mary’s Rd, BN43 5ZA. Tickets cost £4 each (non-refundable) and are available from the library on 01273 467966 or email Shoreham.library@westsussex.gov.uk.
