Council staff unite for Pride ‘City of Sanctuary’ celebration

Staff from across Brighton & Hove City Council are pulling together for a ‘loud and proud’ Pride Parade entry this weekend.

Their purple, emerald green and gold extravaganza – featuring a Samba band and a huge sea serpent – will be themed to show support for Brighton & Hove as a ‘City of Sanctuary’.

Staff from the council’s LGBT Workers Forum, Women’s Network, Disabled Workers’ and Carers’ Network and BME Workers Forum will all be shaking their stuff.

Also joining in the fun will be groups from across Sussex that offer support for migrants, refugee and asylum seekers. These include: Doctors of the World; Hummingbird; English Disco Lovers; Sanctuary on Sea; the Brighton & Sussex Migrant Solidarity Campaigns and the Refugee Radio and Movement for Justice.

The council’s deputy leader, Councillor Gill Mitchell, said: “We’re proud of the part the council has played in the City of Sanctuary movement to offer a welcome to those seeking sanctuary in the UK.

“We are also grateful for the amazing work going on in the community to make the City of Sanctuary idea a reality in our city.

“Brighton & Hove is a beacon city for LGBT people across the UK and beyond who have chosen to come and live here because of its reputation for being open and accepting.

“Our Pride Parade entry will be about embracing tolerance and acceptance, and showing solidarity with asylum seekers and refugees living in exile who have lost their homes and families.”
