To commemorate the centennial anniversary of the First World War, Shoreham Wordfest will host a talk depicting West Sussex’s impact on the Great War.
Alan Readman, former County Archivist, will draw on the extensive archives of the County Record Office and the County Library to describe the impact of the war on the home front along with the overseas battles of the Royal Sussex Regiment.
As part of WSCC’s programme of events to commemorate the start of the Great War, Alan will shed light on life in the trenches of the Western Front and reflect on diaries and letters from soldiers on the frontline.
In addition, some of the works of prose and poetry associated with the regiment will be reviewed.
A story of service and self-sacrifice, it pays homage to a regiment and to a generation on the anniversary of the outbreak of the Great War.
The talk will take place at Shoreham Library at 7pm on Friday 19th September and tickets are £3 each.
Lionel Barnard, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “As a county we need to remember the great sacrifice that was made, both in battle overseas and also on the home front during the conflict.
“The Great War brought about huge social changes which have had a lasting impact on our local communities.
“This year’s programme breaks new ground with a number of events that should keep everybody interested and is also a great opportunity for upcoming novelists to get first-hand advice on how to publish their work.
“Since launching in 2011, Shoreham Wordfest has continued to expand and there will be a variety of writers, plus workshops, walks and much more to keep visitors entertained.”
As with all literary events, book groups remain prominent and on Friday 3rd October Hookline Books will be dropping into Shoreham Library.
Hookline, an organisation where book group readers choose which manuscripts will go print, are hosting an evening’s entertainment and aim to dispel the myth that book clubs are not all tea and biscuits!

This is a free event, but pre-booking is essential.
Tickets are available for both events from Shoreham Library 01273 467966 or by contacting any West Sussex Library
