The Broadway Players return, in July, to The Royal Hippodrome Theatre for a musical double bill. Firstly, the junior section of the company take on the well-known title Guys and Dolls Jr whilst the senior section follow the week after and bare all in The Full Monty with both productions Produced and Directed by Jade Powers.
Set in Damon Runyon’s New York City, Guys and Dolls Jr. follows gambler, Nathan Detroit, as he tries to find the cash to set up the biggest crap game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck; meanwhile, his girlfriend and nightclub performer, Adelaide, laments that they’ve been engaged for fourteen years without ever getting married. Nathan turns to fellow gambler, Sky Masterson, for the dough, but Sky ends up chasing the straight-laced missionary, Sarah Brown.
The show takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, but everyone, eventually, ends up right where they belong.
Guys and Dolls Jr. is an adaptation of the show considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy. Its namesake ran for 1,200 performances when it opened on Broadway in 1950 and won numerous Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Frank Loesser’s brassy, witty book and immortal score which features recognisable songs such as “Luck Be A Lady”, ‘Sit Down You’re Rocking The Boat” and “Bushel and A Peck”, makes Guys and Dolls Jr. a perennial crowd pleaser and a feel-good show for all the family.
Performances of Guys and Dolls Jr are on Friday 6th July at 7.30pm and Saturday 7th July at 2.30pm & 7.30pm. Tickets £11-£13 (Family Ticket £44) can be purchased from the box office on 01323 802020 or online at www.royalhippodrome.com
The Full Monty is a raucous, pop-rock-musical send-up of gender expectations and stereotypes… that takes it all off.
Based on the cult hit film of the same name, The Full Monty, a ten-time Tony Award nominee, is filled with honest affection, engaging melodies and the most highly anticipated closing number of any show.
While spying on their wives at a “Girls’ Night Out,” a group of unemployed steelworkers from Buffalo sees how much they enjoy watching male strippers. Jealous, out of work and feeling emasculated, the men come up with a bold and unclothed way to make some quick cash. In preparing, they find themselves extremely exposed; not merely physically but emotionally. As they conquer their fears, self-consciousness and prejudices, the men come to discover that they’re stronger as a group, and the strength that they find in each other gives them the individual courage to “let it go.”
The Full Monty is a story full of heart. Right to the end, audiences will be wondering if these lovable misfits will really pull it off. With a raucous mix of razor-sharp humor and toe-tapping pizzazz, this heart-warming, upbeat comedy is a must for any theatre goer looking for a great night out.
