Hear about West Sussex’s link to King Charles II’s dramatic escape from England

Hear about the dramatic climax of Charles II’s escape from England and the part played by a West Sussex coal merchant.
The talk, given by historian Rupert Matthews, takes place at Shoreham Library at 7pm on Tuesday 4 October.
Shoreham played a key role in the King’s dramatic flight.

Having been defeated at the Battle of Worchester in 1651, the young King spent seven weeks on the run.
Chased by Cromwell’s Roundheads with a price of £1,000 (today around £800,000), he finally found someone willing to risk execution by taking him to France.

Shoreham coal merchant, Nicholas Tettersell, took Charles over the channel on his next voyage to London to buy coal to sell in ports along the Sussex coast.

Tickets cost £4 and include light refreshments. They are available from the library on 01273 467966 or email Shoreham.library@westsussex.gov.uk.
