Lesley Garrett CBE, Britain’s best known soprano, regularly appears in opera, music theatre and concerts, and can often be seen and heard on television and radio but, on Thursday 18th July she will be appearing live at the Royal Hippodrome Theatre, Eastbourne to help raise funds for St Wilfrid’s Hospice.
For more than 30 years she has enjoyed one of the most successful careers of any modern day
classically trained soprano, winning both critical acclaim and the affection of many fans and
music lovers through the breadth and diversity of her work.
Lesley has taken leading roles in many operas including The Merry Widow, Barber of Seville, The
Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, A Midsummer Marriage and The Mikado and worked with the English
National Opera, Welsh National Opera, Opera North and Glyndebourne Festival Opera. She played the
role of Mother Abbess in the stage version of The Sound of Music and most recently performed in
her first stage play The Messiah.
She continues to perform regularly in concerts with all the major UK orchestras including the Halle
Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. She has
toured with the European Union Chamber Orchestra and sang with the Russian National Orchestra.
As a recording artist she has recorded 14 albums including Soprano in Red for which she received the
Gramophone Award for Best selling Classical Artist of the Year. She was also a featured artist on
the platinum selling Perfect Day single released by the BBC in aid of Children in Need. She has
released 6 DVDs.
On television she has appeared in programmes such as Lesley Garrett Tonight, The Lesley Garrett Show,
Who Do You Think You Are, Countdown, Strictly Come Dancing – where she was partnered with Anton Du
Beke – Loose Women and Songs of Praise. On radio she has presented a show on Classic FM.
