On Saturday 28th of January your prolific, caustic, sardonic, and humble “The Psychy Poet”, in the shape of my own good self, was invited to the Grand Opening of the new Eastbourne Volunteers Hub and shop.
I was invited because on request I had written a poem for this excellent new venture based in The Labyrinth off Mark Lane central Eastbourne. My poem request was aimed to help promote their “volunteer” scheme which allows people to gain work experience, skills, socialise and get a job reference etc! The poem I wrote is unimaginatively, but very aptly called “Volunteer”, which is also the name of the new monthly local paper they are from now going to be producing, with updates of the scheme, local news and of course advertisements too.
Back though to the Grand Opening attended by no less than Eastbourne’s Lady Mayor, M P Caroline Ansell, ex M P and local celebrity Stephen Lloyd, local dignitaries, Counsellors and a large crowd (larger in the confines of The Labyrinth) of about fifty plus people who came to support Helen Burton who has founded and got this initiative going.
Returning further back then to your poet’s offering, which I was asked to read out to this fervent crowd of supporters amongst the elite guests. I did so with loud and confident gusto after Helen had made the introductory speech, but before the red ribbon of opening was cut by The Mayor. I have to say that I was proud, honoured and keen to do so as I managed to mention my “Poetry World” of published books, and personal poem writing for people, but more importantly the charity Help for Heroes that I support and donate to from all sales!
In conclusion I am very pleased to say that my poem was greatly appreciated, loudly applauded and I met many very nice people as well as the senior guests there too.

Volunteer
It is often said that a volunteer
Is worth more than ten pressed men,
Of course now that includes women
But wasn’t always a factor then.
Now women have an equal say
So can make more decisions too,
About the challenges of life
And what you want to do.
One meaning of a volunteer
Is about someone freely choosing,
To help out, or give their time
Instead of just idly cruising,
Without an idea or plan
Of what you want to achieve.
So being around helping others
Your pattern you can weave.
For volunteers gain experience
Like the requirements of the world,
And business skills and attitudes
That need to be unfurled,
Dealing with different people
Will always give you thrills,
And trying different challenges
Is sure to teach new skills.
So don’t dither about wondering
How to get that special job,
For learning things as a volunteer
Will make your life blood throb!
