Sleeves were rolled up in Highfield, Littlehampton, last week [Friday 11 March 2016] as residents did their bit for the Clean for the Queen campaign.
Armed with refuse sacks, litter pickers and hi-vis jackets, families joined forces to make their neighbourhood look spick and span as part of a national campaign to clear up Britain in time for Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday.
As an added incentive, Greggs – an official sponsor for Clean for the Queen – provided hungry volunteers with free food and drink in a goodie bag and two lucky winners bagged £10 Greggs vouchers in a Trash Treasure Hunt.
Tesco also provided squash and biscuits for the hard-working volunteers who, with the help of youth club Project 82, collected around 30 bags of rubbish.
Councillor Terence Chapman, Arun District Council’s Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said: “We had a very good turnout and people really got into the spirit of the event, working tirelessly to make the neighbourhood sparkle!
“We would like to thank everyone who took part, along with Greggs for kindly donating refreshments and vouchers, along with Tesco. This is a fantastic campaign and we are looking forward to seeing the results of other tidy-ups across Arun.”
Littlehampton Mayor, Councillor Marian Ayres, said: “What an amazing difference a couple of hours made to the appearance of the street scene. A big thank you to everyone who helped to organise the event and provide the food.” Councillor Billy Blanchard-Cooper from Littlehampton Town Council, who is the
manager of Greggs in the town, said: “It was good to see so many different people getting involved with the Clean for the Queen event. This just proves that community and team spirit are definitely alive and well in Littlehampton.”
