The joys of walking is one of the better ideas I have taken up again, having completed nine walking marathons for a number of charities and the last one I did was on my 75th birthday. It was the Beachy Head route and the Seven Sisters were the hardest part of the walk. Around the White Horse there is a proper path and viewing down on a clear summer’s day people were having picnics and sun bathing, even though the slope of the hill was very steep. Two stops, one at an Alfriston Tea Shop and then The Hiker’s Rest through the Golf Course and then back to Beachy Head ended our marathon and the combined money from our team of walkers from Eastbourne Gilbert and Sullivan Society was £1,600 for NCH Action for Children.
This, you may think is self appraising – but it has a hidden message which can be more than said for drivers who throw their rubbish out of their vehicle windows and people who picnic who leave their rubbish in the fields and people that walk just throwing their rubbish in the streets. Obviously they do not realise they are putting up their own taxes when the authorities have to clear up their mess. So wouldn’t it be a good idea to reduce this before it reaches beyond everyone’s pockets?
It would be a lot easier and cheaper to take your rubbish home and place it in your bins, after all every household where possible has a rubbish bin of some sort. The amount of dog-ends that people turf out of their vehicles is disgusting! You might think how clever you are especially if you don’t actually live in the house that you have discarded your filthy habit remains there. There may be children who play in that area and they might pick these up out of curiosity and if you have children yourself you wouldn’t want this sort of thing found by your children.
I now walk on a daily basis when I can, around an estate and the amount of rubbish I see strewn in gutters, in the road, in people’s front gardens would fill quite a few black bags.
You will all complain when your Borough and County Taxes go up because the cleaning of your rubbish is one of the top problems of this society – progress doesn’t always mean the best thing since sliced bread came on the market. Think before you flick your fag and other rubbish out of your vehicle and you people who picnic please clear away before you leave because the land you are sitting on doesn’t belong to you and why should other people clear up after you – TAKE YOUR RUBBISH HOME!
The above is just my opinion and anyone who wants to write to me care of the newspaper regarding the content – please do so! Swear words are not accepted.
