In response to the recent erosion at Pagham, Arun District Council will be replenishing the beach with 10,000m3 of recycled shingle.
The Council’s contractors, Earlcote Construction, will be setting up site later this week [March 17 and 18] in readiness to start work on 21 March to counter the loss of shingle around the Yacht Club and East Front Road area of Pagham. The work, which has been funded by the Environment Agency, will take
approximately two weeks.
Around 10,000m3 of shingle will be taken from the eastern end of the spit, where it is covered by water at high tide, and transported in dump trucks to
Pagham Beach.
The contractor will be starting early on the first day to form a track across the channel at extreme low water but following this initial work, disturbance will be
kept to a minimum.
Councillor Terence Chapman, Arun District Council’s Cabinet Member for
Environmental Services, said: “The funding to carry out this work, which willhelp to protect the properties in East Front Road, is very welcome. We apologise in advance for any disturbance this may cause but we hope residents will appreciate the benefits of getting this work done as soon as possible.
“We are aware of the vegetated shingle habitat and we would like to assure anybody concerned about disturbance that machinery will be kept away from these sensitive areas.” There will be excavators, bulldozers and dump trucks working on the beach and the public are kindly asked to keep clear of operations for their own safety and to keep dogs under control.
