Shoes Maketh the Man…

It is said that you can tell a Gentleman’s worth by his shoes. In the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries, if a man wore elaborate shoes, especially with buckles on them, you knew he was of noble birth. A person was actually judged on their footwear.

There are recent studies on shoes and how they reveal your personality. With this in mind, think hard. Do you ever actually judge a person by their shoes? I’m asking this in a serious capacity.  A recent court case involved a receptionist, who was sent home without pay when she refused to wear heels. I would like to shout out to this brave lady, who like all of us wants to be treated fairly. I am gobsmacked that in the twenty-first century we are still fighting for fair treatment.

The argument stems from a companies policy that states women should wear high heels, make up and be presentable at all times. Some would argue that men have to wear suits, and that they aren’t comfortable. I would like to make the point that wearing a suit doesn’t impact on your posture or give you back ache. I challenge anyone to wear a pair of four inch heels for more that five minutes, without wanting to burn them (no matter how beautiful they are).

I am in no doubt that being presentable when dealing with business contacts or the general public is essential, but why does this equate to being an object to be appraised on looks alone? We are human beings and no matter how much our clothes or shoes reflect our personalities or indeed our worth, is it reasonable to be judged on appearance alone?

We live in a very judgemental world, it’s all about likes and validation. Every selfie a young girl takes furthers this notion that we need to be “liked” to fit in to society. I’m not saying we should all turn up to work in our sweatpants or leggings, but lets be realistic, beauty lies within, as I’m sure does intelligence and all the other amazing qualities men and women alike wish to be judged by.

Try a new trend, lets judge people by their actions (it’s worked for me). Sorry if the inner hippy offends you, she’s very incensed at the moment. Peace out!
