When it comes to making ends meet, a recent survey from the Office of National Statistics says that, “Since 2009 the number of self-employed women has increased by 34%.” Yet, the survey pointed out these jobs were often “cleaners and domestics, childminders and related occupations” with an average weekly earning of just £207.

Yet in the last 18 months Worthing wife and mother of four, Christine Blackledge, has gone from an employee of 30 years standing to being an industrious multi-business “mumpreneur”. More than just that, Christine is fulfilling her childhood dream of studying law that started 12 months ago at the University of Brighton!

What’s the secret? Christine replied, “I asked myself if I was achieving my true value working for someone else.” With the guidance of her business coach, Christine started creating her new independence within a few short months. “I simply worked on Christine taking what was in her head and turning it into a business product that she could replicate and sell”, according to her mentor, David Lee.

Not satisfied with that, in the last 12 months Christine now offers personal consultations for start-up recruitment agencies, has introduced a care-standards programme for a group of UK nursing homes, plus started a will-writing service. “I got myself certified as a will writer after the stress that came from the poorly-worded will of a close family member.” And that was the start of yet another new business!

According to Brighton estate agent, Chris Still, “Christine approached us this year with her will-writing proposition which our customers appreciate. This is a free service to all our home buyers at a time when they most need an up-to-date will.”

As for university life, Christine is now inspiring the next generation, challenging them to become the “business leaders of tomorrow”. 19-year-old undergraduate, and university Law Society President, Tapiwa Chipato, said of her fellow student, “Christine actively encourages us to approach our coursework with the same dynamism as she does in business. We love her!”
