Uckfield’s Community Radio Station Goes From Strength to Strength

Starting in late February and continuing through March 2019, Uckfield FM conducted an online survey of their audience to gauge and record some information regarding the radio listening habits of people living in the town of Uckfield and in the surrounding areas (Postcodes TN22 and BN8).

The station is very pleased to report that, following that survey, they know that 54% of those questioned said that they had listened to the town’s community radio station at some point during the previous seven days – with 87% of participants saying that they listened during the Breakfast and Daytime hours.

According to the results of the survey, Uckfield FM was the preferred choice as the most listened to radio station with Heart Sussex (41%) in second place and BBC Radio 2 (40%) following very closely behind them.

With the arrival of new technology, although the station can say with confidence that most people still listen to radio via FM at home, as well as in the car, there has been, and continues to be, a steady increase in the numbers of people listening to the station via phone, tablet and smart speakers.

A cross section of males and females through different age groups took part in the survey and in answer to some of the questions asked they said that 80’s music was their most preferred decade of music, with the seventies their second preference.

Local news and travel bulletins were regarded as a vital information source they get from their local community radio station, however both National and International news, local events guides, topical discussions or interviews and local sport coverage they all felt were still important.

Mike Skinner, the outgoing Chairman of Uckfield FM said : “These results are great and continue to prove the need for a local radio service in this area and that over the near nine years that station has been on air full time, we continue to grow together with our local audience”.

The station is also due to take part in some external audience research later this year and the results of that survey will be provided soon after the research has been completed.
