Volunteer marshals needed for Mid Sussex Marathon

Mid Sussex District Council is looking for residents who would like to support the Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend by becoming volunteer marshals.

The Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend features three races, one on Saturday 3 May in East Grinstead, another on Sunday 4 May in Haywards Heath and a final race on Monday 5 May in Burgess Hill. Marshals are needed to look out for everyone taking part in the race and to provide help and advice to the spectators who have come along to cheer their friends and family on to the finish.

All three races will be organised by specialist race managers Nice Work on behalf of Mid Sussex District Council, with support from Burgess Hill, East Grinstead and Haywards Heath Town Councils.

Volunteer marshals will help the race organisers by:

•           directing runners along the race route

•           monitoring crowd activity

•           being aware of all entrances and exits, the location of toilets, car parks, first aid, lost children points etc

•           responding to direction from Chief Marshal Supervisors

“Volunteer marshals play a vital role in the Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend, without them this fantastic community event simply could not take place,” said Haywards Heath Town Councillor Mims Davies.

“As a volunteer marshal you will help to direct runners and spectators, guide people to the location of nearby facilities and provide assistance in the event of an emergency. Anyone can do it; all that we ask is that you are over the age of 18, are comfortable with standing for long periods of time and can be ready to start at 9am.

“We need a few more volunteers, especially for the Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill races, so if you think you could spare a few hours to be part of this great event then we’d really like to hear from you.”

The Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend comprises three races over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend. Races take place on consecutive days and runners can take part in all three, tackle two or choose to enter just one race. Combined, the three races cover a total of 26.2 miles – the classic marathon distance.
