Winter opening hours to begin at Household Waste Recycling Sites

Winter opening hours will come into effect at Household Waste Recycling Sites (HWRSs) in West Sussex from 1 October 2020.

Sites will open from 9am to 4pm until 31 March 2021.

There will also be some seasonal changes to the days sites are open. Burgess Hill, Chichester, Worthing, and the temporary site at Crawley will open for six days a week during the winter months.

Chichester will close on Tuesdays and Burgess Hill, Worthing, and Crawley will close on Thursdays.

The temporary site at Crawley will re-open on Monday 28 September and will be open until 6pm every day until Sunday 4 October. Winter opening hours will come into effect on the later date of Monday 5 October for this site only. From this date the site will be open from 9am – 4pm each day excluding Thursdays.

Residents are advised to check opening days and times online at www.westsussex.gov.uk/recycling before they make a journey.

Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We appreciate this has been a challenging year for all our residents and I would like to thank you for continuing to recycle as much as possible and making full use of your kerbside collections where possible.

Social distancing measures will continue to be in place at all sites. Visitors are asked to follow these measures and be respectful to site staff. Verbal or physical abuse at the sites will not be tolerated.

Residents will need to provide ID, for example a current driving licence, to prove they are a West Sussex resident to be allowed entry to the sites.

Householders who drive a commercial-type vehicle or use a trailer are also being reminded to obtain a free permit before visiting the HWRSs. The permits are designed to help address congestion at the sites and eliminate illegal disposal of commercial waste: https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/land-waste-and-housing/waste-and-recycling/van-pickup-and-trailer-waste-permit/
